EarthWise

The Purpose
EarthWise is an A-list (household/community service) fundraiser established to help organizations offset the costs of activities while providing a measurable benefit to communities and the environment.
How It Works
As the organization sells EarthWise Conservation Kits to friends, family members and the general public they retain a portion of the proceeds to fund the organizations trips and activities. Not only is this a good way to raise money but it also provides quantifiable benefits to the community and the environment. Each EarthWise Conservation Kit is designed to provide a household with the knowledge and tools needed to immediately reduce their use of electricity, their utility bills, and the amount of pollution and greenhouse gases they emit into the atmosphere on a daily basis. The result is a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone. The resource savings achieved by the program will be documented on the EarthWise Website and credited to the organization. These savings documentations can be the basis for excellent news coverage and positive publicity for your organization both regionally and nationally.

Why Compact Fluorescent Lights?
Most people do not realize that the average home is responsible for up to twice as many greenhouse gas emissions as the average car. Approximately 60% of the energy consumed in our homes comes from burning fossil fuels which release greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. Replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs is one of the fastest and easiest ways to significantly reduce the amount of energy used at home. Today’s CFLs use approximately 75% less energy and can last up to 10 times longer than the old incandescent bulbs.
Estimated Savings
Each family participating in the program has the potential to save over 358 kWh, $37.48 in electric bills and 565 pounds of greenhouse gases yearly. Over the life of the devices, each household can be expected to save more than 3580 kWh of electricity, $381.27 in electric bills and 5650 pounds of greenhouse gases.

How many sixth graders know when and how to change the furnace filter at home? (And why it’s important?) Or how much water is used each time someone flushes the toilet? Or takes a shower? And how much energy is required to heat that water to 120 degrees for a two-minute shower – both before and after the installation of a low-flow showerhead?
