Taking Down Goliath with a Slingshot

By Loyd on November 9th, 2009

You may not know Dean Kamen by name or by sight but you’ve undoubtedly seen the invention that rocketed him to stardom on TV, in movies, and maybe even in person. It’s called a Segway. Kamen is back with a new invention, this one without wheels.

Kamen’s latest brain-child, called “Slingshot” after the fabled weapon used by David to tackle the monstrous Goliath, takes dirty river water, ocean water and even raw sewage and turns it into pure drinking water without the energy and tons of machinery required to clean dirty water under conventional means.

Does it work? In the summer of 2006 Kamen delivered two Slingshots to a small community in Honduras for a trial. During the month they were there the machines were fed whatever water the villagers could find, it was processed and turned into clean, potable water. Read more…

Fantastic Photos of Mars Raise More Questions About History of the Red Planet

By Loyd on September 10th, 2009

The tilted plane of the camera creates the illusion of a flat surface of Mars when in reality the gullies are on the sloped side of Hale Crater. Scientists believe such gullies are strong evidence liquid water flowed on Mars in the not too distant past. Image courtesy of NASA/JPL/University of Arizona.

For years science fiction writers have spun stories of man inhabiting Mars and scientists agree that Mars holds the highest chance for successful human habitation. This week the University of Arizona which runs the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) equipment mounted on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter released a series of stunning photos of the surface of Mars from perspective you might have if you were flying overhead in an airplane. An End to Water Conservation?

By Loyd on August 14th, 2009

Robert Bisson has spent the last 30 years scouring the Earth for it’s most precious resources; gas, oil and water; now he might just be the end of water conservation. Bisson’s ground breaking theory is that the Earth is already broken. Broken and leaking in fact.

Bisson’s theory is basically this. There is ground water stored in and below bedrock. What’s ground breaking about this simple idea is that for decades scientists believed bedrock was impermeable and that it was physically impossible for groundwater to be stored in or below it. Bisson’s theory isn’t just a theory though, it’s recently been put to the test and proven to, pardon the pun, hold water. Read more…
