How Many Square Feet do you NEED (not want)?

There has been plenty of discussion over green building, affordable living, and square footage. If you read the majority of articles and blogs on the subject, you know the trend is smaller the better. Some display living areas no bigger than a cracker box (or a U-haul truck), and expect us to be giddy with joy! But living in such extremely small spaces such as those can’t be good for one’s functionally, spirituality, or sanity! There is a such thing as going too small, and going small for small sake (to keep up with the Jones’) and it isn’t going to help anyone in the long run – especially you. Read more…

Today’s Solar – Nothing Like the Past

Back in the 1970’s and 80’s solar panels were all the rage. Coming out of the energy crisis of the 1970’s it was pretty evident that things had to change or we’d run out of energy before the new millennium. Back then the majority of the solar units were large, clunky abominations mounted on your roof that were mainly for heating water. Water could then be pumped through radiant floor heating systems or used anywhere heated water was required. Any energy savings you attained was from not having to heat water in your natural gas or electric water heater.

Things have changed and today’s solar homes are nothing like the ones 30 years ago. Read more…
