Do we really think about where our energy comes from every time we flip a switch? Do we really scrutinize over if we need the light we are flipping on or leaving the room without turning off? We all just assume that the electricity is going to be there when we need it (except when we forget to pay our bills – and heck, even then we still expect it!). But our resources are coming to an end or causing adverse effects that are much too great to bare the loss of.

California Leads in TV Efficiency

Today California has unveiled new energy efficiency standards for televisions. If you did not already know, televisions are one of the largest energy suckers in your home.

Now they do have ENERGY STARĀ® televisions on the market nationally. But this announcement states that as of 2013 standards for new televisions energy efficiency will tighten even further yielding an average energy reduction of 49 percent! Read more…

Lori Bongiorno, Environmental journalist and author of Green Greener Greenest: A Practical Guide to Making Eco-smart Choices a Part of Your Life has busted three myths regarding CFL’s.

We all know that, not only do CFL’s use WAY less energy than regular incandescent bulbs, but they last WAY longer too. However, there are still reasons why consumers are hesitant to purchasing and using them.

Myth #1: CFL’s are a major safety hazard because of the mercury they contain.

Fact: Yes, CFL’s contain a small amount of mercury and if the bulb breaks, yes, you will be exposed to it. But according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the amount of mercury you would be exposed to is just about the same amount you consume when eating Albacore tuna. Read more…
