The big rain storm that slammed California on October 13th was the largest and most powerful October storm since 1962. NPR estimated that it dumped more than 8 billion gallons of water onto Lake Tahoe.  If each gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs that means the combined weight of all that water was an astounding 66,720,000,000 lbs.  Yes, you read that right…that’s billion with a B, folks.  That’s just an incredible amount of water!  The level of the lake actually rose over a foot in just one 24 hour period.

Will You Wear Chicken Feathers?

Anyone living in California is aware of the drought.  I attended a seminar a couple weeks ago and the discussion focused on new ways to manage California’s water.  One of the biggest issues is how water is used in agriculture, amounting to 85% of all developed water in the state.  And cotton is the crop with the greatest irrigated acreage.  Cotton for our clothing and all types of other things is very water intensive.  Is there an alternative?  Absolutely, some pretty interesting ones!  Check it out at Treehugger.com http://www.treehugger.com/galleries/2009/08/weird-eco-fabrics.php?page=1

Will You Re-Plumb for Grey Water?

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times (California may adopt more lenient graywater code in August, L.A. Times-7/6/09, By Susan Carpenter), California residents may finally find it easier to use “grey” water to irrigate their landscape.  Everyone knows California is in it’s 4th year of below-average rainfall and water agencies throughout the state are requiring mandatory water cuts.
