The big rain storm that slammed California on October 13th was the largest and most powerful October storm since 1962. NPR estimated that it dumped more than 8 billion gallons of water onto Lake Tahoe.  If each gallon of water weighs 8.34 lbs that means the combined weight of all that water was an astounding 66,720,000,000 lbs.  Yes, you read that right…that’s billion with a B, folks.  That’s just an incredible amount of water!  The level of the lake actually rose over a foot in just one 24 hour period.

Why Does California Burn Every Summer Like Clockwork?

Ever stop to think why California has outbreaks of disastrous fires every year?  Why is Southern California, in particular, so susceptible to fires? Why do we keep building our homes in areas that get hit annually? Its like building your house on a train track and expecting the train not to come! I have to admit it, I love to walk into an air conditioned grocery story at the height of summer.  California does get hot, and this recently transplanted Son of Oregon saw his webbed feet revert back to toes, and his skin take on a shine long since forgotten.  After riding all around on a hot Saturday afternoon it’s a joy to breeze in and just feel the stark coolness of that giant fan blowing down from up high just as soon as you enter the store.  And it works.  Grocery stores want you to come in on a hot summer day and cruise around before you mosey on out back to the hot car.  And while in there cooling down, why not shop for what you need and linger just a while?
