Driving around today I saw so many Christmas Trees sitting at the curb ready for trash day. For those of you haven’t converted to an artificial tree or didn’t opt for a potted Christmas tree – please recycle. Trees are biodegradable so they can easily be recycled for mulch, generated electricity and even help in rebuilding the coastline.
In my hometown, our recycled trees are chipped into mulch, which is used in parks and open space to prevent weed growth and soil erosion. Last year over 11,000 trees were recycled in our area.
It’s wonderful to see what other cities are doing with their left over trees. In Vermont, recycled trees are mulched and burned to generate electricity for power companies. The city of Burlington is even providing free curbside pick-up.
And in Louisiana, the Jefferson Parish Christmas Tree Marsh Restoration Project uses Christmas Trees to help the fight the miles of coastal erosion and slow wave action. The program has created 8 miles worth of tree fences and restored 250 to 300 acres of marshland.
