Why aren’t my neighbors recycling?

recycling

Today was recycling day in my neighborhood. On my way to work I noticed only a handful of people were recycling.  Why?

Did they forget today was recycling? Could be.
Don’t they believe recycling is important? What!  Do they live under a rock?
Or, are they just that ignorant about how recycling is necessary in today’s world?

Whatever the reason, we can all do more to recycle. Local governments, trash collectors and neighborhood associations can easily do more to increase recycling rates. Through better education programs, incentives to recycle, and making it fun and easy, we could see a tremendous increase in recycling. Read more…

Drink Pouch Brigade

Picture 1

With 2 kids, my household seems to go through a ton of drink pouches & juice boxes. At the start of the school year we received a flyer asking us to bring in our used juice pouches so they could be converted into pencil bags & backpacks.  My daughter’s school had joined the Drink Pouch Brigade™ program. Each year billions of drink pouches end up in landfills because they cannot be recycled.  The company TerraCycle teamed up manufactures to create free programs that collect non-recyclable packaging which they upcycle into new products. Its surprising to see how many drink pouches the school collects each week. The kids are saving the pouches from taking up space in landfills and receiving a $.02 donation for each drink pouch they collect. Join the brigade!Juice pouch

COP15

There’s a subtle difference between predicting “Who did it?” in a mystery novel and “Who did it and how does it affect me?” in the real world.  I used to especially love teaching middle school students because they were growing out of that cute but academically awkward little kid stage where they simply learned about new ideas, and into that stage where they started to apply, with various degrees of success, what they learned and molded it into their own opinion.

COP15

As I read daily about the ongoing COP 15 Copenhagen conference on climate change my mind races to keep up with the plethora of ideas, agreements and disagreements, and the seemingly never ending weaving of some sort of agreement on what to do about climate change.  All that is good and well and should support healthy discussion-not diatribes nor pettiness-about what to do to stop global warming.
