See Them Before They Die

By Leanne on July 17th, 2009

I am sure you have heard of endangered species, but what about endangered vacations? Here is a list of U.S. vacation spots that I found on Yahoo that you might want to take some time and visit before they no longer exist. Each of the vacation spots listed landscape is being threatened in some way by an environmental hazard.

Florida Everglades

1. Paddling the Florida Everglades

Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United State.  Going on a canoe ride is definitely a once and a lifetime experience. For a very long time this magnificent place has had a problem with there being not enough water, but thanks to a 35-year preservation plan the water levels have gone back up. Now, thanks to global warming, sea-levels are expected to  rise and potentially cover the low-lying land.

2. Photographing Glaciers in Glacier National Park

By the year 2030, Glacier National Park could end up being a glacier park with no glaciers. Only 17% of the glaciers found in 1850, still remain there today and most of the more famous glaciers have already shrunk by more than half.

Snake River

3. Salmon Fishing on the Snake River

The Snake River used to produced half the wild Chinook salmon found in the Columbia River. However, the four dams in the lower Snake River have been named by the group American Rivers  “The most endangered rivers in America.” Also, per a federal judge, the dams might need to be breached in order to save the salmon. If this does not happen then the salmon runs could face extinction.

Las Vegas

4. Whatever it is That Happens in Vegas

Vegas, going extinct is never going to happen. Or could it? Because there has been a strain on Lake Mead, which is one of the lakes that the Colorado River has been directed to go into, it could be dry by the year 2021. Since Lake Mead supplies 90% of the drinking water for Las Vegas I am thinking that this could pose a serious problem.

Now, I know that just because people say these things are going to happen does not exactly mean that it will happen. But, just in case, if there are any places above that you or children would like to see, try not to put it off because who knows it might not be there tomorrow.

Las Vegas has enough money to find creative ways of obtaining water. They’ve talked about paying for desalination plants on the California coast in exchange for California’s rights to Colorado River water. They have also reached to the northern part of Nevada to get a hold of ground water there.
