Here is a list of things that Green America think you should always buy green:
1. Paint – You want to look for Low or, ideally, no-volatile organic compounds (VOC) paint.
2. Paper -You want to get paper products with a high post-consumer recycled content. 38.9% of waste in a household is from paper, so whenever possible try and use cloth instead of paper (i.e. cloth napkins).
3. Light Bulbs – Try and buy Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFLs) which use half the amount of CO2 and will last 10 times longer than conventional light bulbs.
4. Appliances- Always look for appliances with the Energy Star label. Using energy-efficient heating and cooling systems can cut your annual energy costs by 20%, and switching to energy efficient appliances, like washers, dryers, refrigerators, and dishwashers, can cut hundreds of dollars of your annual electricity bills.
5. Fruits and Vegetables- You want to try and look for organic, local, in-season produce which not only helps you save money, but also helps out your community. Also look for Fair Trade Certified™ fruit such as bananas, mangoes, pineapples and grapes. Fair Trade Certification guarantees that farmers were paid a fair price for their harvests.
