In an attempt to make bottled water better, and following the trend of putting things in a box (see wine, potato salad, and a funny SNL skit-you know the one…), we now get water in a box! yahhhhh….ehhhhhhh…poop. Like that is going to make packaged water better. I can just see it now: people drinking out of cartons instead of bottles at the grocery store while waiting in line. I think someone is getting lazy….. Putting water in a box doesn’t even address the issue of how the water is handled and the fact that tap water has more quality standards than bottled! Kudos for trying to address the packaging, but what about the actual product!? A Michigan-based water company called Boxed Water is Better is filling FSC-certified Tetra Pak boxes with water.
The creators of Boxed Water is Better say the packaging is more sustainable, and the carbon footprint for distribution is up to 80 percent smaller than with bottled water …they have provided this moderately convincing PDF. To further back up their mission—”Creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit”—they will donate 10 percent of profits to water relief foundations, and another ten percent to reforestation foundations (both TBD, according to their FAQ). This took a step away from “art project” and toward “commercial product” when it started distributing locally in Wisconsin.
“Started with the simple idea of creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit – we found that it shouldn’t be bottled at all, but instead, boxed. So we looked to the past for inspiration in the century old beverage container and decided to keep things simple, sustainable, and beautiful.”
The only thing I can say, from a designer’s point of view: the cartons are pretty cool. I like the simple design. But, I still won’t drink out if it!

If we just drank tap water more often, we wouldn’t have to worry about environmentally harmful containers.
I agree with Domnick. I personally have nothing against tap water and don’t see what the big deal is with drinking it.
Exactly!!!
